Data and Sources
Every factual claim on this site is checked against a primary source before it is published. This page sets out what that means in practice, including what we refuse to do.
What counts as a source
In descending order of authority:
- The organisation that administers the thing — a municipality for a road closure, a national park for a trail, a regional government for a harvesting season
- The operator that runs it — a railway, a ferry line, an airport, a cableway
- National and regional tourism authorities — for regional facts, not for individual businesses
- The establishment’s own website — for facts about that establishment only
What we do not use as a source, ever: booking platforms, review sites, aggregators, resellers, marketing collections, and other travel articles. They recycle each other, they go stale silently, and they have an interest in the answer.
When we write to someone
Where an authority publishes nothing, we ask. Where an answer comes back, it is attributed as what it is — information provided by a named organisation on a stated date, not published regulation. If the practice later changes, the record shows what we were told and when.
When sources contradict each other
This happens more often than it should, and it is the reason some figures do not appear on this site.
Our rule is simple: where sources conflict and no authority settles it, we publish nothing. A number you cannot stand behind is worse than no number.
What goes out of date, and when
Access rules, seasonal calendars and transport timetables change annually, and some change mid-season.
Where a date matters, we name the source the fact was checked against — and where an operator sets its dates year by year rather than once, we say so, because that is your signal to look again before you book.
What we do not accept
No paid placements, no sponsored entries, no complimentary stays. Selections are made before any commercial contact, and a property’s presence here is never bought.
Affiliate links. Some links on this site earn a commission at no extra cost to you. They have no bearing on which places appear or in what order. Where a property is cheaper booked direct and says so, we tell you and link there instead.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, we would rather know. Sources are named so that a claim can be checked at its origin rather than argued about.
