Truffle Season After the Fair: December and January in the Langhe
Smart Summary
Almost everyone plans a Langhe truffle trip around the Alba fair, and almost everyone therefore misses half the season.
- The Alba market runs 10 October to 6 December 2026, weekends only
- The legal white truffle harvesting season runs 1 October to 31 January, set by regional decree
- That leaves roughly eight weeks of legal season after the market has closed — in a region that has emptied of visitors
- And from 15 December the prized black truffle season opens, so mid-December to January is the only window when both are legally in season at once
The catch is not the truffle. It is what stays open. Read the practical section before you book.
Where the dates come from
Piedmont revised its truffle harvesting calendar by regional decree in April 2024, explicitly in response to climate change, with effect from September 2024.
| Truffle | Legal season |
|---|---|
| White truffle — Tuber magnatum Picco | 1 October – 31 January |
| Prized black — Tuber melanosporum | 15 December – 15 March |
| Musk truffle — Tuber brumale var. moschatum | 15 December – 15 March |
| Winter black — Tuber brumale | 15 December – 15 March |
| Summer truffle — Tuber aestivum | 1 June – 31 August, 1 October – 30 November |
| Uncinato — Tuber uncinatum | 1 October – 31 December |
| Smooth black — Tuber macrosporum | 1 October – 31 December |
| Tuber mesentericum | 1 October – 31 January |
| Bianchetto — Tuber borchii | 15 January – 30 April |
Harvesting of every species is prohibited from 1 to 31 May and from 1 to 30 September.

What that means in practice
October and November are the fair, the crowds and the peak prices. Fine, and thoroughly documented elsewhere.
December after the 6th is the region’s own season. The market has packed up, the coaches have gone, and the white truffle is still legally in the ground for another eight weeks. Restaurants that were impossible in October have tables.
From 15 December, the prized black truffle season opens while the white is still running. This is the only period of the year when both are legally in season simultaneously — a fact worth mentioning to a kitchen that cares.
January is the quietest month with legal white truffle, and the last of it. After 31 January, anything sold as fresh local white truffle is not from a Piedmontese hillside.
And in September, nobody is legally harvesting anything at all.
The catch: what is actually open
This is the honest part, and it is why this article is not simply “go in January”.
The Langhe closes in winter. Many hotels, restaurants and cellars observe a winter break, and several close for weeks around January. The region’s rhythm is built around the autumn season, and once it ends, a good deal of the infrastructure follows.
So the truffle being legal is necessary and not sufficient. Before booking a December or January trip:
- Confirm your hotel’s winter dates directly. Do not rely on a platform’s calendar
- Book restaurants before you travel, and confirm they are serving truffle. Fewer are open, and the good ones still fill
- Ask the cellar. Winter visits are often possible and often by appointment only
- Expect fog and short days. The Langhe in winter is beautiful in a specific, low-light, indoor way. It is not the golden-vineyard photograph
Our guide to where to stay in the Langhe covers the properties; their winter dates are the thing to check.
What is not worth it
- Assuming the season ends with the fair. It runs eight weeks longer.
- Booking January without confirming what is open. The truffle is legal; the village may be shut.
- Paying October prices for October crowds if quiet matters more to you than the market.
- Buying “fresh local white truffle” in September or February. Outside the legal season for Piedmont.
- Planning a driving tour in fog. Winter fog in these hills is serious. Build shorter days.
- Expecting the fair’s atmosphere in December. You are trading the event for the region. That is the deal.
