The Alta Rocca, and a Bath With a Twenty-Minute Rule

Seven euros gets you into water that comes out of the granite at 38°C, and the people who own it advise you to get out after twenty minutes. The whole of the Alta Rocca works roughly like that: cheap, small, and more specific than it looks.

This is the mountain block behind Porto-Vecchio, between the coast and Bavella — granite villages well above the sea, chestnut forest, and a thermal spring you can walk into for the price of a coffee.

Caldane, and the rule you should actually follow

The baths sit below Sainte-Lucie-de-Tallano, on the Rosa de Caldane estate. The water is geothermal and faintly sulphurous, and it comes out of the ground at 37 to 38°C into a basin built of granite blocks.

What the establishment publishes, checked on its own site: entry is €7 for adults and €3 for children aged two to eight, access runs 9am to 8pm, and no booking is needed. Between 1 July and 31 August 2026 the baths also opened every evening until 11.30pm.

And this, which is the part worth reading twice. The estate’s published guidance is to keep a bath to twenty minutes, once a day. Diving, jumping and swimming are not allowed, to keep the water clear.

That is not crowd management dressed up as a health notice. Twenty minutes in water at 38°C is a physiological instruction, and it is the one written by the people who run the spring. Follow it.

Which raises the obvious question, since we were there for the better part of three hours. The answer is that the bath is not the visit. There are loungers, there is a bar and there is food on site, and the shape of an afternoon here is twenty minutes in the water and a long time out of it. Go expecting a spring you soak in all afternoon and you will either be disappointed or ignoring the notice.

What we paid on the day, August 2026. Alongside the published €7, the on-site board listed €30 for the jacuzzi and baths together, and €80 per person for the package including a massage. Those two were read off the board rather than the website, so treat them as August 2026 prices rather than a current tariff.

The genuinely actionable thing: we took the massage on the spot, with no booking, on a wet day. If the weather turns on you in the Alta Rocca — and it does — this is the answer, and it does not require having thought of it in advance.

Where we stayed, and what went wrong

Auberge U n’Antru Versu, San-Gavino-di-Carbini. Ten minutes from Zonza, twenty from Bavella. Eight rooms, a wood-fired restaurant and pizzeria, three stars, and free private parking according to the tourist office. €278 for two people, two nights, breakfast included — about €139 a night in August 2026.

It is not grand luxury and does not present itself as any. It is sharp, which is a different and more useful thing at that price in that week of the year.

Now the weak point, stated precisely, because the precision is the point. A storm took the power out for five hours. The grid failing in a mountain village during an August storm is not the auberge’s doing and it would be dishonest to score it against them. What is theirs is that across five hours there was no fallback of any kind, and breakfast was not served. It was also not charged, which is the right response after the event.

So the advice that comes out of it is not “avoid”: it is have a plan for breakfast. Storms in the Alta Rocca in high summer are ordinary, power cuts follow them, and a small auberge has no generator. Something in the car for the morning solves it entirely.

Zonza: what we tested, and what we did not

Domaine Le Mouflon d’Or. We ate here and would again — a good table, in a village that has more of them than its size suggests.

We did not stay. The estate has rooms, they looked worth noting, and that is as far as we can honestly take it. A bed we have not slept in is not a recommendation, and the gap between “we ate there” and “we stayed there” is exactly the gap most travel writing quietly closes.

The rest of it

Sainte-Lucie-de-Tallano is where to spend the evening: a proper square, bars and restaurants on it, and enough going on that you are not the only people there. It is ten minutes above the baths, which makes the obvious afternoon-into-evening pairing.

A bakery at Ribba Rossa, Levie (20170). We can give you the address and not the name — there was no sign we could see, and we are not going to invent one from a map listing. It exists, it is good, and you will know it when you get there.

The Alta Rocca is thirty to forty minutes above the coast everyone books, and it runs at a completely different temperature and a completely different price. On a fortnight it is worth two nights, not an afternoon.

Method. The €7 and €3 entry, the 9am to 8pm access, the water temperature, the summer evening opening and the twenty-minute rule were checked on the establishment’s own site on 2 September 2026, and the twenty-minute limit is the estate’s guidance rather than our advice. The €30 and €80 rates were read off the board on site, and the room price was paid, both in August 2026; neither is quoted as a current tariff.
