Piedmont in Truffle Season: How to Time It

Smart Summary

Most people planning this trip assume Alba’s truffle market is a daily event they can drop into. It is not, and the actual arrangement should determine when you go.

  • The World White Truffle Market runs 10 October to 6 December 2026 — Saturdays and Sundays only
  • Saturdays 09:30 to 19:30, Sundays 09:30 to 19:00, with last entry half an hour before closing
  • It is held in the Cortile della Maddalena in Alba, entered from Piazza Falcone
  • Which means: weekends are busy and expensive across the whole region, and midweek is calm but the market is shut

The trip splits in two, and you should decide deliberately which one you are taking.

The two trips, and how to choose

The market trip. You come for a weekend, you go to the Cortile della Maddalena, you see the truffles being sold and graded, and you eat extremely well. You also share the Langhe with everyone else doing the same thing. Book accommodation and restaurants months ahead — this is one of Italy’s genuinely oversubscribed weekends.

The region trip. You come midweek in the same season. The market is closed. The hills are quiet, the restaurants have tables, the cellars have time for you, and truffle is still on every menu in the region — the market is where truffles are traded, not the only place they are eaten.

The best version, if you can: arrive on a Wednesday, have the Langhe to yourself for three days, and stay through Saturday for the market before the weekend crowd fully lands.

What is actually on

The market is the centre of it, but the fair programme around it runs far wider — a world truffle market, cooking shows, tasting workshops, cookery courses, dinners with visiting chefs, wine masterclasses, and the folklore events in the town including the donkey palio.

One practical note from the organiser’s own material: the 2026 edition is themed around “Autentiche Relazioni”. Anything with a chef’s name attached sells out first, and the organiser runs discounted early-booking periods that open and close well before the season — check the fair’s own site for what is current when you book.

Where to stay: Casa di Langa

Booking through this link may earn Sharp Voyage a commission, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend. How this works.

At Cerretto Langhe, on a hill in the middle of the Barolo, Barbaresco and Alta Langa country, in a landscape that is itself UNESCO-listed.

Thirty-nine rooms and suites, each with a relaxation area and a private terrace. The Alta Langa Suites have canopy beds and 50 m² terraces looking across to the castle at Serralunga d’Alba and the Alps behind. There is the Lelòse spa, the Fàula restaurant working from local produce, cooking classes, and Vespa tours of the surrounding villages.

Book it if you want a base in the hills rather than in Alba itself, and you would rather drive fifteen minutes to dinner than be in the middle of the weekend crush. Our guide to where to stay in the Langhe sets out the three positions in full.

Skip it if you want to walk out into a town in the evening. This is a hillside resort in a hamlet; Alba is a drive.

What is not worth it

  • Turning up midweek expecting the market. It is a weekend event across two months. This is the mistake that ruins the trip.
  • Booking a market weekend late. The Langhe fills for these dates and rates move accordingly.
  • Thinking you need the fair to eat truffle. You do not. The season is the season across the whole region, and a midweek dinner in a village restaurant is frequently the better meal.
  • Basing yourself in Turin and driving in. It is feasible and it wastes the evenings, which is when the Langhe is at its best.
  • Skipping the car. The villages are spread across hills with minimal public transport.
  • Coming in high summer for this. The truffle is an autumn and early-winter product. Summer in the Langhe is lovely and is a different trip entirely.

Practical notes

Getting there. Turin is the natural airport for the Langhe. Milan works with a longer drive.

When within the season. October gives better weather and thinner supply early on; November and early December are the deepest part of the fair. And December and January remain legal white truffle months long after the market has closed — colder, greyer, far quieter, and considerably cheaper to visit.

Booking the fair. Buy tickets and event places online in advance. The market has an entry ticket; the dinners, courses and masterclasses are separate and go quickly.

Restaurants. Book before you travel, not on arrival. On market weekends this is not negotiable.
